Building the Monolith: 5/3/1 for Size and Strength

Hatch Squat Team

Building the Monolith

"Building the Monolith" is a specific template within Jim Wendler's 5/3/1 framework. As the name suggests, it is designed to build a "monolith" of a physique—big, strong, and imposing.

The Creator: Jim Wendler

Another creation from Jim Wendler, this program addresses the criticism that 5/3/1 doesn't have enough volume for hypertrophy. Wendler designed this to be a challenge, both mentally and physically.

The Methodology

This is a 6-week program that throws the "start light" principle slightly out the window in favor of high volume and hard work.

The Challenge

  • 3 Days Per Week: Full body workouts.
  • High Volume: You will be doing 100 reps of assistance work (Chin-ups, Dips, Face Pulls) in almost every session.
  • Widowmakers: 20-rep squat sets are a staple.
  • Diet: Wendler famously recommends eating 1.5 lbs of ground beef and a dozen eggs a day to recover from this program.

It is a test of will as much as it is a training program. If you can survive Building the Monolith, you will come out bigger and stronger.
